AKIRA's Japanese Trailer - English Re-Edit

It's been a while. I used to write a lot on this blog, but recently, I've taken off on a long break. I think it's about time I get back into blogging.

I'll post more about my future plans in the next post. I promise.

For today's post, I present to you all - the most time-consuming project I've ever worked on: an English re-edit of the original Akira trailer.

After the release of the original 1988 anime film Akira, English distributors decided to make their own trailers, all of which are different from the Japanese theatrical trailer. The one thing they didn't do was to re-edit the Japanese trailer and create an English version - the original trailer still exists as a bonus on the Blu-ray: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtPhrCTjMtQ

So as a free gift to the Akira community, I've done a shot-by-shot recreation of the original trailer, using the newly remastered footage from the Blu-ray. Here's the list of edits I made:

  • New remastered footage from the Blu-ray
  • New English translated text sections
  • New sound effects - (a few were ripped directly from the film)
  • Voice lines replaced with new ones from the 2001 Pioneer English dub
  • A fan mix of Kaneda's Theme to match the one that was featured in the original trailer

Feel free to repost my re-edited trailer, as long as you credit me as the original creator, or simply provide the link to this video :)

That's all for now, see you in the next one :)

Investigating Hayao Miyazaki's "Rin the Chimney Painter"

Introduction Spirited Away is my personal favorite film of all time, it is one of Hayao Miyazaki's great masterpieces that once sat on the top of the box office revenue for about 20 years ($395 million) and had gone on to win many awards including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003. Little do people know that this fantasy film, which is now considered a classic of anime cinema, had gone through many phases of development during production. In May 2001, a few months before Spirited Away's release in Japan, Miyazaki was interviewed in which he mentions the earlier incarnations of the film. Here's the quote translated from the original Japanese to English by Ryoko Toyama, edited by Team Ghiblink, sourced from Nausicaa.Net : "There is a book for children, "Kirino Mukouno Fushigina Machi (A Mysterious Town Over the Mist)" (by Sachiko KASHIWABA, published by Kodansha). It was published in 1980, and I wondered if I c...

My review of Peter Wessel Zapffe's "The Last Messiah"

After reading Emil Cioran’s ideas, particularly The Trouble With Being Born , I decided to step a few decades back to see what his Norwegian predecessor, Peter Wessel Zapffe, thought of humanity’s chaotic existence. Zapffe’s essay proved itself to be quite a thoughtful read. One night in long bygone times, man awoke and saw himself. He saw that he was naked under cosmos, homeless in his own body. All things dissolved before his testing thought, wonder above wonder, horror above horror unfolded in his mind. Zapffe’s decision to employ the essay format to convey his nihilistic perspective on humanity is undoubtedly effective. In short, he considers the human consciousness, in its developed, post-ape state that we’ve had for many thousands of years now, as a tragic accident. It is what Zapffe calls  “a biological paradox, an abomination, an absurdity, an exaggeration of disastrous nature.” Zapffe observes that, in order to combat the existential dread of being so conscious of life, as...

Three personal diary entries

I have written a lot of stuff in my personal diary, most of which are meant to express my desires or my most controversial thoughts. Today, I present three entries from the diary that I find most profound. I feel that these entries are certainly worth your time reading. Most of my entries are just so lame and makes me sound like a crybaby who couldn't figure out his feelings. But not these three entries, they are personal, sure, but they also reveal some of what I originally had in mind for the blog - I guess you could say that these entries are the "prototypes" of my upcoming posts. Haha! Anyway, that's enough from me. I will now let the diary speak. See you in the next post! ~ Bal Masque ~ October 12, 2021:      I would like to talk about antinatalism. Antinatalism, or anti-natalism, is an ethical view that negatively values reproduction. With the increase of the world population to about roughly 8 billion people, we need to remind ourselves of why we’re here. More ...
